After a successful run at festivals like Sitges, Netflix surprised with the first part in 2020. The sequel was inevitable and arrives directly on the platform with new characters but a similar approach: a mysterious leader imposes his law in the Hole while a newcomer fights the controversial system. An absolutely continuous film that asks if it can separate itself from its predecessor to show its own personality.

In this new trilogy, the popular video game archaeologist continues his adventures from ‘Survivor‘. This animated Lara Croft, voiced by Hayley Atwell, emphasises action, survival, and abandoned tombs.

An overwhelming talent of new Indonesian cinema is Timo Tjahjanto. Initially drawn to horror, he made one of the best action films of 2018 with Netflix’s brutal ‘The Night Comes for Us’ He returns with this nearly two-and-a-half-hour epic about a young assassin who fights her mentor and organisation to save a child whose mother was killed by a criminal gang.

Gender and role changes are obvious, but the tone is more like the American classic than the British original. Hannah Howard’s Felicity Ward may be one of the year’s most relevant comic-pathetic discoveries, but Michael Scott will be hard to forget.

If you like ‘La revuelta’ but don’t get enough Monday to Thursday, Jorge Ponce’s documentary starts as a homely true crime and becomes a meta and surreal reflection on the format. The trailer is confusing, but it promises fun.

A new adaptation of Stephen King’s vampire novel, which was adapted into a 1980s miniseries by Tobe Hopper and traumatised Spanish children, is coming. Scarier or less than the original? The trailer features all the classic King elements and a few shocking sequences for a project that Warner decided to show after two years of incomprehensible shelvement.

Armando Ianucci (‘Veep’) and Sam Mendes (‘1917’) may have the month’s most poisonous comedy. Also targeting Warner’s speciality: superhero movie franchise dysfunction. Lots of green screen, handsome mosquito-brain men, and Hollywood’s future at stake. Let’s see who feels referenced.

Disney+ is preparing for Halloween with an exclusive film about a traditional, disturbing ghost story starring Sarah Paulson (‘American Horror Story’) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (‘The Bear’, ‘Fantastic Four’). A single mother with two daughters manages her farm while her husband finds work. In addition to the harsh environment, where sandstorms are common, a stranger appears and puts them in danger just as inexplicable supernatural phenomena occur.

Disney+ isn’t the only place to watch Disney’s many subsidiaries’ classic and not-so-classic films.
