I've spent four hours as a bounty hunter

We all want a good Jedi and Sith adventure in Star Wars, but the bounty hunter is a figure that draws attention beyond Force users. Harrison Ford’s flawless performance as Han Solo in the original trilogy is responsible for this role’s magnetism. Sly, cunning, and ever-present epic luck.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws title explores the galaxy’s underworld for a reason. It’s a way to escape the galactic conflict and explore a terrain that, though explored, can always surprise. Particularly between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With a month until its release, I can finally control Kay Vess’s journey.

After four hours of gameplay, I’ve explored planets like Toshara and Kijimi, space, and an Imperial station. I started playing almost immediately after the protagonist arrives at the planet with a vast savannah, like any newbie in the business. To leave, I need to fix my ship, the Star Chaser, so I’ll take the speeder to the first port to make contacts.

Why? To make contacts, gain Imperial credits, and gain respect from the factions. You can never please all four, but I’ll take the risk. This Star Wars era is perfectly captured on the cantina path. Ruinous gas stations, tools, and workshops, stormtroopers beating someone in a corner, and Sabacc players huddled around a table.

It feels like you’re in a lost Star Wars universe, even though you can’t talk to anyone. In the scenarios, everyone has a role and must stay on paper. You can’t bump into NPCs, talk to almost anyone, and many areas become corridors. Star Wars Outlaws departs from Watchdogs and Cyberpunk 2077.

Ultimately, this is an open-world action-packed adventure, not GTA. Bounty hunters can travel, complete side missions, and play mini-games like retro arcade machines, but they can’t cause chaos. You’ll have to dodge Imperials in an enemy base if you don’t cause it. Nix excels at stealth tactics—the best approach.

The little alien can open doors, disable alarms, blow up barrels, and climb on enemies’ backs to distract them. Kay’s loyal companion, a textbook stuffed animal, and the game’s most useful tool, holding the protagonist’s hair. He hacks all kinds of locking mechanisms, and it took me a while to figure out how he works. Although you should have seen those TIE-Fighters explode in the space debris, I’m ashamed of my inability.

I was skilled and saw one of my biggest concerns about the Ubisoft Massive project firsthand. The Starhunter is slow but powerful enough to destroy rival ships. The experience isn’t as fluid as Star Wars Battlefront, but it’s functional enough to feel like you’re in a starfight. Additionally, the speed of light jump is unavoidable.

That led me to Kijimi, where C3-PO’s brain shorts out in The Rise of Skywalker. More impressive than the ice planet is the previous journey full of polar ice caps floating in the middle of nowhere. The celestial body waiting and a few tasks to discover, like shipwrecks, make a great picture. Every time you reach a new destination, you must travel straight for almost two minutes, regardless of whether you want to do anything else.

There I had to steal a relic without being seen, and I think I succeeded. To calm the Ashiga Clan, I had to shoot some thieves, but I did it without surprises. Returning the stolen gift to their queen required lying about my ties to Crimson Dawn. I won’t be too loyal in Star Wars Outlaws, but you must know when to betray.

Finally, I returned to Toshara to resolve a Jabba the Hutt issue. Verrick, a Huge Worm Syndicate agent, has hired me to steal a rival organization’s client list and sabotage their farm-turned-base. Border controls make getting there difficult, so I take the speeder but have to get off to walk. Monda, another bounty hunter, is surprised to see a rookie like me on high ground. Will she support me? I must manage alone because she is not.

The frustration set in when they realized that it was one thing to shoot down stormtroopers in the space base in a certain order, but another to arrive at a place with many enemies. They’re in hard-to-manage spots and notice Kay’s presence easily. Despite my efforts, including marking the opponents’ position with binoculars, I ended up in an almost unwinnable shootout. It may be because you need to upgrade the blaster, but seeing lasers grazing your head is overwhelming.
