‘Megalopolis’ will fail at the box office. While ‘Megalopolis’ is either a self-important delirium or a hilarious misunderstood masterpiece, it is also becoming a symbol of a dying type of cinema, a blockbuster and an auteur film.
Author, author. The film ‘Megalopolis’ is undoubtedly authorial. Since he had been thinking about it since the 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola mortgaged himself to pay for this deeply personal work, which cost 120 million dollars.
A $20 million tip. And more. Lionsgate agreed to distribute ‘Megalopolis’, but Coppola had to pay for the distribution and marketing costs in a very advantageous deal for Lionsgate,
which he accepted in desperation when he saw that the film faced a distributor shortage. Not finding a distributor may reflect our times: a lack of confidence in the author’s commercial viability.
Confidence deficit. Ultimately, that detail matters most. We discussed a few months ago how Coppola’s struggles to find distribution for a film that should have been guaranteed distribution by its director are common today. After the failure of ‘Furiosa’,
George Miller is again facing the same problems as Woody Allen; Clint Eastwood risked Warner breaking off its half-century relationship with him because CEO David Zaslav did not like the decision to finance ‘Cry Macho’, a box office failure; and Scorsese has cancelled the shooting of his next two films.
A dilemma for the author. Directors may be less effective, faster, and more profitable than today’s blockbusters and franchises, but they gave the machinery prestige and variety until recently. Only those with the financial independence to do what they want (James Cameron),
those on a box office streak and industry approval (Christopher Nolan), and those with a personal vision or creative package but no choice but to enter the sequel and franchise machinery survive.
Correct, Scorsese. Scorsese’s 2019 misinterpreted affront to superhero cinema is well remembered. His words foretold a future like the current one: superhero films are not the problem, but a black-and-white industry where only blockbusters, sequels, and derivative and safe products exist.
Everything else, including Coppola, is on the industry fringes. However, how do you raise 120 million dollars without a major? We’ll see how things go, but ‘Megalopolis’ may be the last film of its kind.
