The captivating 'Ghost of Tsushima

One of the highest-rated Playstation games recently is its predecessor.

It was Sony’s big announcement at State of Play, revealing upcoming releases. That’s why the Japanese company left it for the end, knowing the bombshell: ‘Ghost of Yotei’ will be the next installment of the excellent open-world samurai game ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, developed again by Sucker Punch.

Besides the three minutes of cinematics, little is known about this new installment, such as whether it is a sequel or spin-off (though it takes place 300 years later). Atsu, the protagonist, has changed gender. However, we can ride horses through feudal Japan’s paradisiacal settings.

Action includes guns and sword fights. This short trailer doesn’t show gameplay, but it hints at new ways to view 17th-century Japan. Perhaps a new, intimate relationship with the local fauna? The technical leap from PS4 to PS5 (and PS5 Pro) opens up new, unpredictable possibilities.

We move from the Mongol invasion to 1603, in northern Japan, near Mount Yotei. The map’s size is unknown, but it’s expected to exceed the first game’s massive map. The 2025 release of this new title is confirmed. A suggestive feudal adventure to end a news-filled State of Play.

One of the biggest surprises of the State of Play was the final announcement. Developer Sucker Punch showed off significant footage, including stunning cinematics. If the title doesn’t tell you, it’ll feature a new setting and protagonist, Atsu, instead of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima.

Sucker Puncher said little during the presentation, but a PlayStation blog post revealed more. The story will take place in 1603, 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, in the area around Mount Yōtei, now Hokkaido. Sucker Punch says “a far cry from the organised samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.”

As per the post, the creator “wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.”

“We wanted to innovate too. We focused on the Ghost rather than Jin Sakai’s story or Tsushima to create something new but familiar “The post continues. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories, so we wanted to explore what it meant to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask and discovering a new legend. The resulting Ghost of Yōtei introduces a new protagonist, story, and Japanese region.

As “Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5,” it’ll have new weapons, mechanics, and gameplay.

The game even had a “Kurosawa Mode” and was heavily influenced by Akira Kurosawa and other samurai films. Ghost of Tsushima followed a samurai who defended Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. PlayStation 4 version released in July 2020, followed by Ghost of Tsushima: Legends multiplayer mode in October. The Director’s Cut was released for PS4 and PS5 in 2021, and the PC port arrived last year.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski will direct a Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions Ghost of Tsushima film.

The 2020 IGN review called Ghost of Tsushima “an absolutely gorgeous adventure through one of history’s most strikingly beautiful landscapes, and that beauty is compounded by one of the best blade-to-blade combat systems the open-world action genre has seen.”
