The Original Office creator is back, but Steve Carell and Dunder Mifflin are not.
The Australian remake of ‘The Office’ has just premiered on Prime Video, and more details are emerging about what may be the most ambitious and popular remake of the legendary series starring Steve Carell.
The sequel will be set in the same universe as the NBC hit but with new characters. We move from a regional paper company to a marginal newspaper facing closure. We will recreate a fake documentary: the same journalists who filmed ‘The Office’ are now filming this company’s collapse.
Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Ramona Young will star, but we don’t know their roles yet. Greg Daniels, creator of the original series, also created this. Michael Koman from the great but lesser-known ‘Nathan’s for you’ joins him.
Since Peacock, Universal, and Paramount will air this new NBC series in the US, SkyShowtime may air it. We don’t know the release date or filming start. We must wait and make funny faces at the camera.
The odd thing is that Greg Daniels’ hugely popular NBC sitcom The Office, with its awkward but amiable humour and legendary characters like the insufferable Michael Scott, who launched Steve Carell to stardom, is not getting a sequel. Strangely, it has not been produced until now despite its success.
A modern classic. American ‘The Office’ began airing in 2005 and ran for nine seasons, the last two without Carell. It was based on a smaller BBC series of the same name and co-created by Ricky Gervais. The show was a hit (5.7 million people watched the finale, where Carell returned for an emotional reunion), and syndication has valued it.
Got ‘The Office’? Win. Although Universal owns NBC, the series has been on most streaming platforms. It is available on Prime Video, Netflix, Movistar Plus+, and SkyShowtime in Spain. The series is constantly reviewed, as shown by the constant stream of memes and comments on social media. It is current for any platform that lists it.
New ‘The Office’ is in the works. According to Deadline, Daniels will begin work on the sequel next Tuesday after organising a roundtable of his trusted writers to discuss ideas. This ‘The Office’ will honour the two original series rather than rebooting or reviving the same characters.
Maybe the documentary crew. It may be set in a new office with new characters, but it will be set in The Office universe. There are other options. For instance, Deadline’s sources suggest following the documentary crew that supposedly filmed the original The Office but is now on a new assignment.
None of the cast will return. Daniels has also stated that he does not want to return to the same characters with different actors. He is open to the idea of original cast members appearing in this new ‘The Office’, but several sources say a reunion of all the actors is unlikely.
