Horror comics are among our favourites. The fantasy literature podcast we do at Xataka with Minotauro and Planeta Cómic, “Laberinto de papel,” discusses creepy monsters, readers’ mail full of gross jokes, and covers with frightened damsels fleeing from draculesque castles among clouds of bats.

We review ‘Creepy‘ and ‘Eerie’ with journalist Noel Ceballos, a horror comics fan like us. Since the 1960s, James Warren has published two American horror comics that have become pop culture icons with stories that retold classic myths from cinema and literature.

Planeta Cómic’s reissue is identical to Dark Horse’s, and it restores the original comics with a facelift that allows us to admire the masterful art of Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Richard Corben, and the avalanche of Spanish authors who came to the magazine thanks to Ediciones Ilustradas. Planeta has preserved the original ads, mail, and contacts sections, making each issue a time tunnel to a more innocent and fun horror genre.

‘Creepy’ and ‘Eerie’ are visually stunning thanks to their talented artists, but they also prove the power of short horror stories with few characters and a shocking ending. So two of the collected ‘Creeepy’ issues feature Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, the master of short-distance horror. Extra surprise for an essential collection.

Real horror is about creating unease, fear, and terror that lasts after the last page. The best horror comics also give a strange twist to something familiar and safe. The Man Who Came Down the Attic by Celine Loup Stairs follows Emma, a new mother with severe postpartum depression. Her baby won’t stop crying and she can’t sleep, causing great tension with her husband. He seems detached from it all, which makes her feel even more isolated, especially when she starts seeing strange things in the house and can’t tell reality from fantasy.

Why it’s scary: Horror that blurs fantasy and reality can be hit or miss depending on the creator. Loup creates a masterclass in atmospheric horror with this graphic novel about the darker side of new parenthood and how such a drastic change can affect people deeply.

The comic: Emily Carroll’s Through the Woods collects five dark fairytales that start out familiar but change course. A young bride in a secretive old house in “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold” and “Our Neighbor’s House,” which readers may not be able to return, await readers as they travel through the woods. The collection asks what’s haunting “My Friend Janna” and reveals dark secrets about the narrator’s soon-to-be sister-in-law in “The Nesting Place.” Through the Woods publishes “His Face All Red.”

It’s scary because the Brothers Grimm did it first, but not best. This graphic anthology showcases Carroll’s award-winning writing and illustrations, which engage all senses. The reader’s imagination is left to incorporate their deepest fears, and each story strikes a different chord for anyone who remembers being read fairytales as a child.

In Afterlife with Archie, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” and the story begins with a kind request to save Jughead’s pet, Hot Dog, using magic. When Sabrina the Teenage Witch resurrects the dog, the spell starts a chain of events that quickly turns Riverdale into a zombie town, and the monsters don’t stop there.

Why it’s scary: While The Walking Dead is more of a survivalist adventure/drama than true horror, Afterlife with Archie uses the nostalgia of Archie comics and the Riverdale gang against the supernatural twist. This story could be done for shock value, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla make the horror as real and pulsating as the teens’ folksy vibe, elevating the story.

The comic: A young family moves to a small New England town to give their daughter Sailor a second chance after a bad hand in their hometown, but they replace one evil with another. They moved to a town where locals trade living people to mysterious entities at the edge of town (and out your eye) for better health and fortunes. Jock’s terrifying art shows that these ‘Wytches,’ as they’re called, feed on humanity’s greed to turn people against each other and don’t mind getting their hands (and teeth) dirty.

Why scary: Wytches by Scott Snyder and Jock is a classic horror comic that uses their monstrous witches to show the true evil of humans who would sacrifice human decency for a better life. Late in Wytches, Snyder shows that even a parent of a troubled child can be tempted.
