This was how the free Interpol concert in Mexico City's Zócalo went.

One of the bands from New York, Interpol, gave a free performance at the Zócalo in Mexico City over the past weekend. In this manner, the historic concert was witnessed by the audience.

Interpol had a free concert on Saturday (April 20) at the Zócalo in Mexico City, where the band drew over 160,000 fans, according to estimates released by local authorities. The concert was the band’s most successful performance to date.

It was “the most special night” and “a great honor” to sing at a historic place for a country with whom they had kept a very close relationship for twenty years, according to vocalist Paul Banks, who described the experience as “the most special night” and “a great honor.” The group, which also includes guitarist Daniel Kessler and drummer Sam Fogarino (who is now recuperating from surgery and was filled by Chris Broome), has traveled to the country a little more than twenty times. When Banks was 17 years old, he attended school and resided in Mexico. This partially explains why he has the sensation of being at his “second home,” as he said to Billboard Español a few hours prior to the performance that took place on Saturday.

After relocating to New York for his college studies, the vocalist made his way back to Mexico City in 2005, when he performed one of the most unforgettable concerts of his career. When the venue was on the verge of collapsing due to the large number of people that had gathered (about 7,000, according to promoter Iguapop), he claims that he experienced the “terrifying” beauty of the Mexican audience. He says this occurred that night in the Salón Mexica.

This time around, everything was flawless at the Zócalo, which is the most important public space in the country and the second largest in the world after Tiananmen space in China. This includes the sound, the lights, and the logistics. The government of Mexico City organized a security operation that included hundreds of police officers who kept watch over the main plaza and the streets that surrounded it. These officers were stationed at the locations where enormous screens were set up so that more people could see the spectacle without having to go into the throng. Despite the fact that there was a light shower a few hours earlier, spirits did not seem to be affected.

Interpol is the latest addition to the roster of foreign artists who have graced the Zócalo stage, joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Rosalía, Café Tacvba, and Vicente Fernández, amongst others.

The following is a compilation of some of our favorite moments from Interpol’s show in Mexico City, including the full setlist. Before the performance of the opening band, Water From Your Eyes, a voice stated that there will be a surprise from Interpol’s Paul Banks. At the same time, a bunch of mariachis took over the stage. A song called “El Son de la Negra,” which is considered to be one of the most well-known tunes from the Mexican songbook, was played first. After that, a mariachi rendition of Interpol’s “Evil” was performed, and the audience really appreciated it by cheering and applauding. Following their rendition of the timeless piece “El Rey” by José Alfredo Jiménez, they proceeded to play “Evil” once more in order to establish the mood for the upcoming showcase.

Over the course of a little more than an hour and a half, Interpol performed more than twenty songs, bringing the audience on a journey across their seven studio albums. However, the most of the attention was directed toward their albums Turn on the Bright Lights (2002), Antics (2004), and Our Love to Admire (2007). A number of popular songs, including “Obstacle 1,” “Rest My Chemistry,” “All the Rage Back Home,” “The Rover,” “PDA,” “Pioneer to the Falls,” and “Say Hello to the Angels,” were performed in the Zócalo.

During the commemorative tour that will begin in the United Kingdom in November, the New York group will have the opportunity to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their album, Antics. During their performance at the Zócalo, however, the celebration began early with the inclusion of numerous songs from the album that was released in 2004. These songs were “C’mere,” “Slow Hands,” “Narc,” “Public Pervert,” and of course, “Evil,” which was without a doubt the tune that received the biggest applause of the evening.

Paul Banks expressed his profound gratitude to the Mexican audience, which never stopped expressing their affection for the band by applauding, cheering, and lighting the light on their cell phones. This was especially noteworthy during the performance of “NYC,” which was a visually spectacular moment. “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down” marked the end of the show.

In the middle of the elation of those who were present, the vocalist made the following statement: “We have been coming to Mexico for twenty years, and you have always had a very special place in everyone’s hearts.” When it comes to our feelings for you, words are insufficient. We appreciate your presence and the support you have provided over the years. You have our love.
