Memoirs of political campaigns are a tradition in the United States that share a few distinguishing characteristics. A photo that is pleasing, a title that is ostensibly emotional but truly meaningless (“The Truths We Hold” by Kamala Harris; “The Courage to Be Free” by Ron DeSantis), and most importantly, a paragraph that is subtly self-congratulatory and is so insignificant that we don’t recall it at all are all examples of these.

The telegenic Republican governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, who is obviously vying to become Donald Trump’s running mate, has released her own contribution to this great literary heritage. Kristi Noem is a candidate for the 2016 presidential election.

However, it only succeeds on two of these three points: the photograph appears to be beautifully arranged (with a golden clock, a feminist sign in the center, and an American flag in the background), and the title “No Going Back” (no turning back, expressed in French) is appropriately insipid. On the other hand, the substance is, regrettably, memorable in the most negative meaning of the dictionary.

The campaign memoir is a time-honored custom in the United States, made up of a few distinguishing components. These include a photo that is pleasing, a title that is superficially stirring but ultimately meaningless (for example, Kamala Harris’s “The Truths We Hold” or Ron DeSantis’s “The Courage to Be Free”), and most importantly, a sentence that is subtly self-congratulatory and so insignificant that it is completely unmemorable.

The photo appears to be expensively arranged (with a gilt clock and feminist sign in the front and an American flag in the backdrop), and the caption (“No Going Back”) is appropriately vacuous. However, it is successful on only two of these three criteria. On the other hand, the contents are, unfortunately, unforgettable in the most unfavorable possibilities.

It is the story that Ms. Noem tells, with a certain amount of joy, about how she shot one of her pets that is the most strange and unsettling. A pheasant hunt that Ms. Noem had planned for her lodge visitors was wrecked by Cricket, a wirehair pointer that was 14 months old.

Cricket was the unfortunate animal that caused the problem. When the day was over, the rambunctious Cricket closed it off by assaulting several chickens (“she was a trained assassin”) and attempting to bite the hand that fed her (Ms. Noem’s). This is what the governor writes: “I detested that dog.” After that, she makes the decision to put her down by shooting her into a gravel pit and killing her.
