Alec Baldwin's controversial film 'Rust'

Three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on set, Alec Baldwin’s controversial film “Rust” will be released worldwide on November 23. The Netflix horror film “Time Cut,” which will premiere on Halloween, was also revealed by him. In “Anemone,” his son Ronan directs Daniel Day-Lewis back on screen.

Joel Souza will direct and write Rust, an American Western. Alec Baldwin, Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, and Josh Hopkins star in the film, which Souza produced and co-wrote.[2] It premieres at Camerimage in November 2024.

After being sentenced to hang for an accidental killing, ageing outlaw Harland Rust emerges from hiding to save his thirteen-year-old nephew Lucas Hollister in 1880s Kansas. The pair must escape Fenton “Preacher” Lang, a vicious bounty hunter.[3][4]

In May 2020, Alec Baldwin was announced to produce and star in Rust, a Western based on his story with Joel Souza.[3] Baldwin told The Hollywood Reporter he was thrilled to work with Souza after missing Crown Vic (2019). He said it was inspired by a true story and compared it to Unforgiven (1992). He said, “My gun-slinging and horse-riding skills are always ready. I’m a traditional actor. My resume includes motorcycle riding, French, juggling, horseback riding, and gunplay, which I can always access.”[11]

After Baldwin fired a prop gun during scene preparation, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and Souza was injured, suspending production in October 2021. Baldwin and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with manslaughter after multiple lawsuits.[12][13][14] Filming resumed in April 2023 and finished quickly. Baldwin was acquitted while Gutierrez-Reed was convicted.[15][16][17][18]

Baldwin called Rust his “passion project” and spent $6–7 million on it.[19][20]The Avenue bought the film’s distribution rights for $2 million during pre-production.[22] The cast added Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, and Frances Fisher in September 2021, and Jensen Ackles the following month.[24] About 150 crew members, half local, 22 principal and 230 background actors from New Mexico worked on the production.[25][26] This production filmed for 21 days.[22][27] The filming began in New Mexico on October 6, 2021.[28]

On October 21, 2021, the film’s twelfth day of filming, seven unionised camera crew members walked out at 6:30 a.m. MT.[29] They say they were replaced after a producer threatened to call the police and told them to leave the set.[30][31] An anonymous insider told TheWrap that several crew members took several prop guns off-set that day, including the firearm involved in the incident, to shoot beer cans with live ammunition.[32] The prop guns were returned after lunch.[32] Unknown if firearms were rechecked.[33] By October 26, the Santa Fe County district attorney said these claims were unconfirmed.[34]

The cast and crew rehearsed a church gunfight scene at Bonanza Creek Ranch later that day. A locked safe yielded firearms and ammunition, and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed loaded three filming guns on a cart.[29] They included a plastic gun that couldn’t fire live ammunition, a modified weapon that couldn’t fire any ammunition, and a solid-frame.Pietta 45 Colt replica.[29][35][36][37]

According to a search warrant, Gutierrez-Reed briefly checked the guns before assistant director David Halls gave Baldwin the Pietta revolver from the prop cart.[38][39] In a subsequent affidavit, Halls stated that he would open the revolver’s loading gate and rotate the cylinder to inspect the chambers. Halls stated in the affidavit that he did not check all cylinder chambers but saw three rounds. In the affidavit, Halls stated that Gutierrez-Reed retrieved the weapon and opened it after the shooting, and he saw four blank rounds and one that may have been a live round.[40] The warrant states that Halls called it a “cold gun” because it had no live rounds.[38] After a reporter pressed Halls’s lawyer, Lisa Torraco, to clarify, she refused to say he did not take the gun off the cart and hand it to Baldwin.

B-cam operator Reid Russell viewed a monitor on a camera dolly with Hutchins and Souza nearby. Baldwin’s character pointed a gun at the camera from its holster.[29][33] The trio behind the monitor was two feet (0.6 m) from the firearm’s muzzle and didn’t wear noise-cancelling headphones or safety goggles.[29]

Baldwin explained to the crew how he would draw the firearm as the trio behind the monitor repositioned the camera to remove a shadow.[33] He adds “So, I guess I’m gonna take this out, pull it, and go, ‘Bang!'”[29] After removing it from the holster, the revolver fired once. Baldwin denied pulling the trigger, but ABC News reported that a later FBI report said the gun could only fire if the trigger was pulled.[42][43] According to Halls’ attorney Lisa Torraco, Baldwin did not pull the trigger and his finger was never in the trigger guard.[44] The gun projectile hit the three behind the monitor. It hit Hutchins in the chest, passed through her, and hit Souza in the shoulder.[30][38]At 1:46 p.m. MT, script supervisor Mamie Mitchell called 9-1-1, and emergency crews arrived three minutes later.[29] Video of the incident was not taken.[35]

Hutchins died after being helicoptered to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.[46] EMS took Souza by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Centre in Santa Fe, where he was admitted and released the next morning.[47]

The incident halted Rust production indefinitely,[46] but co-producer Anjul Nigam was confident it would resume after the investigation. Nigam later clarified that he meant optimism and hope, not confidence, because many in the production want to honour Hutchins by finishing her final work.[48][49]
