American politics is less afraid to discuss procreation issues.

Two years ago, Lucia Báez-Geller was “over the moon” to learn she was pregnant with her second child. She started trying to get pregnant after her first child at 39, after her physicians gave her the go-ahead.

“I thought everything would be OK because my first pregnancy went so well,” she adds. Doctors told her second pregnancy was failing and the embryo was irretrievable after a few weeks. Doctors gave her three options: a dilation and curettage, a quick operation to open the cervix and remove tissue from the uterus; an abortion pill, which was painful; or a spontaneous miscarriage, which may be risky.

Miami resident Báez-Geller had a D&C at 12 weeks. A year later, she fears Florida’s six-week abortion ban will deny her the same operation, despite the exception for catastrophic fetal defects, which several women struggled to negotiate.

Báez-Geller cried as she stated she and her family would have had to travel nearly 800 miles to Virginia, the nearest state where she could have undergone the treatment, adding to their stress. “It would have devastated.”

Báez-Geller, 41, ran for a U.S. House seat in a Miami district using her outrage over the legislation change. Before Tuesday’s primary, which she won, she claimed she wanted to “humanize the issue” of abortion, using her unpleasant pregnancy to discuss reproductive rights.

Game-changing verdict

This year, women running for office at every political level are discussing their reproductive histories, including IVF, miscarriage, and abortion, which were previously taboo on the campaign trail. Because the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights two years ago, the equation of “Can I talk about these deeply personal issues and still win an election?” has shifted.

Democrats hope candidates will connect with people by sharing personal experiences. Lately, abortion access has become a major Democratic mobilizer. Democrats are citing red state triumphs like Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s re-election and Alabama’s House victory, where the party has prioritized reproductive health care.

Emily’s List president Jessica Mackler said it was “especially imperative” for candidates to discuss their reproductive health experiences after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which struck down federal abortion rights.

“Women sharing their stories demonstrate a deep understanding of these issues and bring authenticity to this conversation,” Mackler said. Voters recognize that these folks will battle for them because they know what it’s like in this post-Dobbs reality.”

Other lower court judgments and legislative action have spurred more candid candidate exchanges after Dobbs.

The Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos used in IVF treatments are human beings influenced Nevada Democrat Susie Lee’s choice to share her story. Lee discussed her repeated miscarriages and IVF on the campaign trail after her family gave her the go-ahead.

I think women leaders constantly say representation counts. Yes, having lived experience and speaking from it counts, she argues. Knowing that women have a complete variety of alternatives is essential to me because I’ve had numerous miscarriages, so this is a personal problem with many gray areas.

Thinking of others going through the same

Arkansas Democrat Caitlin Draper, who is running for Congress, fast-tracked her IVF process out of concern that the Alabama decision will lead to similar changes in her state.

Draper added, “Honestly, we were scared and said, ‘Well, let’s do it,’” of her chats with her husband. She became pregnant but soon realized it was unviable and worried about Arkansas’s near-total abortion restriction.

She shared her story out of anger and worry for women who couldn’t fly out of state if needed.

“In the past, counselors would not have advised women to report personal health details or family struggles. Their advice would have been to keep those things private, says Amanda Hunter, executive director of the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, which has watched the pattern expand over the past decade, especially since #MeToo.

Hunter stated that “The Dobbs decision was a turning point for women to tell their reproductive health stories.”

“When some women feel comfortable telling their stories, it shows other women that it’s okay and encourages them to do so,” she says.

Men talk too.

The tendency has reached men and Republican candidates. Minnesota governor and new Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has openly discussed his and his wife’s infertility. He repeated the experience at campaign rallies and Democratic donor fundraisers since joining the ticket.

“This is personal for me and my family. My wife and I underwent years of reproductive procedures to have children. I remember praying every night for good news, feeling the knots in my stomach when the phone rang, and the pain when we found out the treatments hadn’t worked,” Walz said in his first appearance with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Philadelphia earlier this month. “So it’s no coincidence that we named our daughter Hope.”

During her Republican presidential primary campaign, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley often discussed her inability to have children and her abortion stance. She said she conceived her baby through artificial insemination after the Alabama Supreme Court verdict on IVF.

I battled to have two kids. We were blessed with both my children from fertility procedures. Haley said at a February rally that every state should offer in vitro fertilization to parents.

In the presidential primaries, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis discussed his wife Casey’s miscarriage and its impact on his family, while software entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy claimed his wife Apoorva had one too. Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown from Nevada sat next to his wife during an interview earlier this year in which she described having an abortion before they met, and Rep. Michelle Steel said she did not support federal restrictions on in vitro fertilization because it helped her start a family.

From mother to daughter

Still, Democratic politicians are more forthright about reproductive health.

New Hampshire congressional candidate Maggie Goodlander, 37, told her stillbirth story in her debut campaign video for the 2nd District.

She was 19 weeks pregnant when tests showed her fetus was serious. She and her husband, Jake Sullivan, a Biden national security assistant, were directed to a maternal-fetal medicine doctor but had trouble securing an appointment. Goodlander worried about difficulties due to her age and pre-existing diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and alopecia areata.

After getting an appointment, Goodlander was told her amniotic fluid level was low and needed an MRI. Placenta previa, in which the placenta partially or fully covers the cervix, caused more difficulties.

A two-day surgical evacuation, or dilation and evacuation, was needed after her fetus died.

“The first day, they put rods in the cervix, that’s the dilation phase, and the next day, it’s the evacuation — the language is so horrible,” Goodlander told The Washington Post. Goodlander said the operation was too late, and she delivered her stillborn kid in a hotel toilet near Boston Hospital after the first stage.

“It’s the most heartbreaking and traumatic experience to go through,” Goodlander added.

I cannot imagine anyone other than the patient, family, or provider being involved. She argues radical politicians and judges are generating turmoil, taking rights, and endangering lives by separating patients from providers. She believes the encounter “really shaped the energy that I’m going to put into addressing all sides” of the issue.

Goodlander’s campaign launch video, which incorporates her mother, who ran for Congress as a youngster, shows how women candidates may now express their personal tales.

When my mother stood for office, her opponent’s slogan was, ‘A woman’s place is in the house, not in the House.’ One of her main criticisms was that I, a two-year-old, was home, Goodlander said. “I’m grateful for all the women who came before us, who paved the way and flipped the script.”
