Spanish true crime fiction's biggest hurdle is 'The Asunta case' A case full of mysteries

For the time being, however, the Asunta case was the most obvious option.

There are many challenges involved in writing fiction with Asunta. Netflix, on the other hand, is confronted with a significant obstacle because of the numerous issues that surround the case (to the extent that Alcàsser is equivalent in this regard). The production is openly narrative and fictional, with moments in which the images make a flight towards the unreal that links some sequences with a kind of Galician ‘Twin Peaks’ without supernatural elements. This is accomplished by not only having a top-notch cast, which specializes in many cases (Candela Peña, Tristán Ulloa, Javier Gutiérrez), but also by having a cast that is specialized in characters with multiple edges and dark areas.

Allowing yourself to be carried away by the shadowy aspects of a crime whose explanation we may never know is the only way to tell the story of the Asunta Case. In the case of ‘The Body on Fire’ and its erotic thriller modes, Netflix has already hit the nail on the head. For a story that can only be approached in a logical manner by the use of pure fiction, the extravagance is a positive aspect in this particular instance. In spite of the fact that it is based on actual events.

“The Asunta Case,” the most recent true crime drama to be released on Netflix, is a story that is not only compelling but also terrifying and authentic.
