Trump, Israel, and the “middle class”... First interview: Kamala Harris plays it cautious

The vice president and her running mate, Tim Walz, discussed unity in their first interview as candidates.

This was the month-long-awaited interview for Americans. It concludes a stressful month. Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential contest on July 21 and endorsed his running mate. Harris scored enough electoral votes online on August 6. On August 20, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago confirmed that vote. Harris now reads off a teleprompter in staged appearances since her candidacy. The four-day conference celebrated “freedom,” “hope,” and “joy,” culminating with her acceptance speech.

Kamala Harris held a well watched CNN interview on Thursday night to introduce herself to voters and explain her vision. She was reserved and occasionally prosecutorial. Dana Bash, who moderated the June 27 Trump-Biden debate, asked Tim Walz few questions.

“My values have not changed”

Kamala Harris’ views on significant subjects have varied over her career. To address ecological concerns, she claimed she was “for banning fracking” during the 2019 presidential campaign. During the 2020 vice presidential debate against Mike Pence, she said, “Joe Biden will not ban fracking.”

Her Thursday night statement said she “provided the decisive voice in the Senate, as vice president, that allowed for the expansion of leases.” She called for “vibrant clean energy without banning fracking.” In Pennsylvania, a swing state, polls are against her on fracking.

On immigration, she advocated not prosecuting illegal immigrants in 2019. “I think there should be consequences,” she said CNN Thursday night. We have rules to enforce that target and deal with unauthorized border crossers.” She said “Donald Trump got wind of it and told his supporters not to vote for it,” for political considerations, as Democrats and some Republicans worked on a bipartisan immigration package.

Kamala Harris has apparently changed her mind about universal health care and the Green New Deal, environmental policies. To Dana Bash, she stated, “Let me be very clear: my values have not changed.”

“Middle class strengthening”

Dana Bash asked Kamala Harris what she would do on her first day if elected. “One of my highest priorities is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class,” she said. It’s about “moving forward, just as generations of Americans have been filled with hope and optimism,” unlike “the previous president [Donald Trump]” who “divided” the nation.

She reiterates her “economy that gives opportunities” initiatives. That instance, aid for children ($6,000 in the first year, then $3,600 for children under 6 and $3,000 for children 6 to 17), first-time buyers ($25,000), and small company investments. Her idea to abolish price gouging, which economists disagree on, was repeated. As part of its success, the Biden administration limited seniors’ insulin costs to $35 per month.

“In Nevada, a grandmother showed me her insulin receipts. Before, she was paying thousands of dollars a month. Not anymore.” Harris claims that “Bidenomics”—a word her campaign abandoned because Americans connected it with inflation—has been successful.

“Same tired refrain”

Kamala Harris hasn’t named Trump or addressed his attacks. “Last month, he suggested that you suddenly became black, for political gain,” Dana Bash informed her. On August 1, Donald Trump told the Association of Black Journalists: “Kamala Harris has always been Indian and has pushed her background; now she wants to be viewed as black. Who knows—Indian or black?” The concerned party responded Thursday night: “Same broken record. Please ask next.”

She hides her race and gender, like Barack Obama in 2008. “I’m running because I believe I’m the best person to do this job right now, for all Americans, regardless of race or gender,” she said to Dana Bash.

“Israel has the right to defend itself”

Last week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, this was the single point of disagreement. Thirty “Uncommitted” delegates, representing 700,000 Democratic primaries voters (including 100,000 in Michigan), urged Kamala Harris to impose an arms embargo on Israel. They or their communities are Palestinian and say it’s hard to pay taxes that murder their family members in Gaza. Democrats in Chicago blocked a Palestinian-American woman from speaking about their Israeli-American prisoner son.

Kamala Harris’ CNN statement mirrored her Chicago response: “Let me clarify. I will always back Israel and her ability to defend itself.” She said, “1,200 people were slaughtered, many young people who were just going to a music festival, women who were horrifically raped.”

She argued for a balance between supporting Israel and alleviating Palestinian suffering: “Israel can defend itself. How it does matters. Too many innocent Palestinians died. We must agree.” Bash asked if change was feasible “in terms of weapons,” and she responded “no,” expressing her support for the two-state solution.

“Joe Biden has the disposition Americans deserve in their president”

It’s easy to forget, but Joe Biden was Democratic presidential nominee 39 days ago. After his catastrophic June 27 debate performance, his party urged him to resign 24 days later. He gave the fewest news conferences since Ronald Reagan and stopped speaking to the media. Some have attacked his inner circle for concealing his illness.

“You said President Biden is very strong after the debate. Given where we are, do you regret saying that? Bash asks. Harris: “No, not at all. Absolutely not. I worked with Biden for over four years. Honestly, it’s one of my biggest career honors. The American people matter to him. Smart and patriotic, he is. The American people deserve a president with his intelligence, devotion, and demeanor. Former president Donald Trump lacks that.”

Kamala Harris remembered Joe Biden’s call telling her he was resigning and asking, “Are you sure?” The new contender praised Biden but suggested “a new path, and turning the page on the last decade” of “contrary to the spirit” of the country. The years she mentioned, Joe Biden was president, presidential contender, and vice president.

Despite wanting to “turn the page,” Kamala Harris remained vague in this big interview. Her tendency to get lost in innovations prevented her from delivering anything new. She made no huge mistakes either. While polls are close, it was likely her intention.
