Vladimir Putin endorses Kamala Harris for president.

But according to US officials, Russia is meddling in the current election to Donald Trump’s advantage.

GLOBAL – Something out of the ordinary. On Thursday, September 5, two months before the US presidential election, Vladimir Putin gave his word that he “supports” Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee and the country’s vice president at the moment. Notably, the president of Russia attacks Donald Trump for placing an excessive amount of sanctions on his nation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a public declaration at a Vladivostok economic summit, saying that US President Joe Biden “recommended his voters to support Kamala Harris, so we will support her too.” Vladimir Putin had declared his preference for the incumbent President of the United States over Donald Trump even before Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential contest.

Vladimir Putin noted that Kamala Harris had an additional advantage. “She has such an expressive and contagious laugh that it shows that she is doing well .” The president of Russia went on to say that Republican contender Donald Trump, who occupied the White House from 2017 to 2021, had put “more sanctions on Russia than any president” prior to him. “Kamala Harris may refrain from doing this kind of thing,” he stated.

Russia is charged with meddling in elections

The declaration was released one day after Washington accused Moscow of meddling in the elections, a charge Moscow denied. Thus, Russia is charged with conducting influence operations during the 2016 presidential election that Donald Trump won, especially on social media.

A number of other actions have also been taken by US authorities in response to what they perceive to be Russian attempts to meddle in the elections scheduled for November 2024, including penalties and charges of executives of the Russian media company RT.

Speaking in response, Maria Zakharova of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that these actions were a part of a “information campaign (…) that has been prepared for a long time and is necessary as we approach the final phase of the electoral cycle.” In an interview with state news outlet Ria Novosti, she gave the assurance that Moscow was “obviously” planning a reaction to these new penalties that would “make everyone shudder.”

Which political party, Democratic or Republican, benefited from these alleged meddlings has not been disclosed by US officials. In an apparent attempt to suggest that Moscow was supporting candidate Trump, US Attorney General Merrick Garland restricted his statement to saying that “Russia’s preferences had not changed compared to the last election” based on intelligence services research.
